Back in the World for a While . . .

Hello Friends,

I’m fresh off retreat and back in the world and thinking of all of you out there in your generous and productive lives.

It’s quite a thing to spend three months alone in a cabin in the woods. And it’s quite a thing to then come down the mountain to all the asphalt and televisions and wireless earbuds.

Some have asked what I did all alone up there.

The answer is I did the same thing every day. I ate the same thing for breakfast (oats, raisins, nuts, fruit). I ate the same thing for lunch (brown rice, beans-or-lentils, potato, carrots, broccoli, and sauerkraut). My big treat was dried mangoes for dessert. And cashews. I really like cashews.

My schedule was basically the same each day:

Early wake up
Meditation
Yoga & breakfast
Meditation
Lunch & chores & maybe a walk
Meditation
Yoga & break
Meditation
Early bedtime

And that was it.

Food deliveries every one to three weeks. A call to my mom on her birthday. Shave and bathe every three or four days in the bathhouse down the hill; laundry washed in a 5-gallon bucket.

No phone, no internet, no running water, no electricity, no friends, no family, no distractions, a wood stove for heat, candles for light, and a single meditation manual for guidance.

It all felt very sweet and meaningful to me.

Still, I am glad to be back in the world with all of you. And glad I get to go see Devon and spend some time with family. And I’m glad that my three month spring retreat will be in more of a group format, where I can be engaged with others, maybe contributing a little to community, even in the midst of my meditation commitments.

Sending many good wishes to all of you and lots of love and happiness,
Craig
