This Is a Really Weird Time to Go on Retreat for Three Months
It's that time again:
On September 15th, Devon and I will enter yet another cloistered meditation retreat. If all goes as planned, we'll emerge again on December 15th*, bright as polished coins.
Truth be told, it always feels a little jarring to duck out of the world for a quarter year. But this time, what with COVID and BLM and the SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT ELECTION IN OUR LIFETIMES . . . well, it's even weirder.
We'll vote by mail, of course. Our donations are set to monthly.
But, nevertheless, it feels pretty odd.
This December, when we emerge from our cabin-based time capsules, what world will be here to greet us?
Let's hope it's a better one. A world with a functioning vaccine (and an America where people like vaccines). A defeated demagogue. A flipped senate. Maybe even a moment of collective exhale as we assess where we've been, and where we want to go.
But who knows? Nobody can predict what will happen in the next ten weeks.
We will be thinking of you all. This I can say. We will certainly be thinking of you all as we let the silence settle around us, as we chop wood and cook our simple meals, as we turn our hearts, again and again, to this deepening.
Be well, my friends. I hope you find goodness. I hope we all find love and comfort and justice and peace.
See you in December, on the other side of . . . all this.
Much love,
Craig
*Devon plans to come out of retreat twice to teach, so do not fear MMTCP friends.
